better late than never

I was just updating Attoparsec.com, and I decided to finally put up a higher quality demo video of the self-adjusting electro-mechanical sunglasses. So, well, here it is.

In other news, I've been getting more serious about my job hunt recently. No replies yet. (Though apparently my skillset looks good to Discovery Channel casting directors? More details to follow on the off chance anything comes of it.)

So very, very nifty.

Now you just need to figure out how to wire it up to a standard issue Peril detector.

Wait, you might need to invent that first.

If I ever make a version run by a microcontroller instead of component electronics, it will have a microphone and flash to full dark whenever it hears a loud noise.

So people can suddenly blind you by yelling at you?

[identity profile] gfish.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 05:06 pm (UTC)(link)
It would be worth it for the joke.

Clap off, clap off! The Blinder!

Coolness - thx for posting.

Best wishes w/the job hunt.

awesome!

From the video, one can't be sure that you're not rotating the lenses yourself.

[identity profile] gustavolacerda.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
At what points are you changing the light?

[identity profile] gfish.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that was under manual control. The automatic mode never worked very well, largely due to problems with the tiny servo. It seems to have a much more primitive control loop than larger servos do, very easy to get it locked into a jittery state.

[identity profile] gustavolacerda.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The lens rotation was under manual control?

Do you have a demo showing the "self-adjusting" mechanism?

[identity profile] gfish.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you can see me twiddling the control pot after turning on the electronics. I just wanted to show the motion of the mechanism and the resulting change in opacity.

I don't have a demo of the automatic mode running, but I could do that.

I need a monocle version of this to replace my paralysed right iris.

[identity profile] gfish.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Hrm. I suspect that new generation of high-speed autopolarizers would be the best solution here, but it would make for an interesting problem. Making an actual monocle would be very difficult, even the nylon gear version is quite heavy. But doing a full goggle with only one driven lens would be easy enough. The new (nonfunctional, display only) model I have is actually quite comfortable.

I've seen what are essentially steampunk eyepatches; a single goggle with a strap to cover only one eye. (Monoggle?)

Knife switch!

Also, if you're looking at the same "casting call" email I got regarding Discovery channel shows, I think you should absolutely go for it. You are a shoo-in for such a position, and also I could say that I knew you before you were big.

[identity profile] gfish.livejournal.com 2010-02-18 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, if you have an opportunity to use a knife switch, use it! :)

And, yeah, I'm sure it's the same one. They're supposed to call me at some point. Sounds like having a "big personality" is the important thing here, not sure I can sell that quite as well. Sure does sound like a fun experience, though.

Hmmm. Maybe you need a wacky cohort to your straight man. Like, someone who's maybe not as smart, but still on the same basic wavelength and could provide a different perspective. Perhaps someone with spikey hair, piercings and a tendency to quote the internets.

...Do you know anyone like that?

[identity profile] gfish.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'll keep that in mind. :)
