Sigh. I have ALWAYS wanted to do that. My ideal would be to drive to seattle, take a ferry to Anchorage, drive up the Dalton to Deadhorse/Prudhoe, then come back and across the Yukon, down to Montana and home. I don't think this is going to be happening soonish.
We looked at taking the ferry. And it would be fun, but even with very conservative gas/lodging estimates it comes out considerably more expensive, and doesn't save much time. Maybe if you could get to the southcentral area, but there are only three connecting trips a year from the Inside Passage, all in late summer. We could only get to Haines/Skagway this time of year, which is already 2 days drive from the southcentral area. Just not worth it.
I really wish we could drive up the Dalton. But we have neither the time nor the vehicle for it. There is talk of taking some of the money saved by driving home and flying up to Prudhoe or Barrow for the day. I'd sure like to see the Arctic Ocean, except it will still be frozen then, and a very expensive side trip. We'll probably try to fly over to Cordova to see the Million Dollar Bridge instead.
If you want a navigator for your Arctic excursion, let me know. Planning this trip is just making me want to drive to all kinds of insanely remote places. :)
