Tonight we leave for a perilous trip across the mountains in the dead of winter. Why? For the Tuesday Trilogy, which starts are 1pm tomorrow. The extended versions of Fellowship of the Ring and Two Towers, followed by Return of the King. Since this is obviously one of the most important events to ever happen in my lifetime, I'm commemorating it with a Tolkien roadtrip mix CD.

It represents just about every phase of Tolkien inspired music. It has 60s/70s psychedelic rock. It has foreign 80s metalish bands. It has filk, wandering instrumental soundscapes and intricate Elvish songs. It has Howard Shore scoring and Hobbit rap. And no, it does not include Nimoy's Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.

Sometimes... sometimes I really love my life.

Cass has a record of Tolkien reading/singing his own songs. Do you have any of that action?

No, I didn't find any over a weekend of frantic searches. Are they any good? I think my parents might have the LP, but I only vaguely remember listening to it.

Um. "Good" is such a qualitative word… They're "interesting."

Drive safely, and watch out for marauding mundanes--they're everywhere over there!

You should load the Lord of the Rhymes videos into Isthmus so we can watch them in line. Or can we just stream them from home?

I'm not sure if I want to know ... ... but Tom Smith?

Yes, 'Return of the King, Uh Huh' closes the disk. :)

*groan* :)I knew it would be on there, but I had to ask anyway...

Fie! Fie I say! I'll bet you don't have "Frodo of the Nine Fingers" from the Rankin-Bass version of "Return of the King" on there, either!

No, but it is sampled in Lords of the Rhymes' (http://www.lordsoftherhymes.com/) Nine-Fingered Frodo.

I must say, while I always thought they were pretty great, I appreciate them a lot more having just reread the books. They worked in a lot of little bits of poetry and dialog that I hadn't noticed before.

Probably too late now, but would you mind sharing your list of selections when you return? Thanks!

If you don't already have this in your repetoire, I would highly suggest Johan de Meij's Lord of the Rings Symphony. Five movements, all very well composed. Each is named after a character/scene from the books, and it really feels like the music is describing that part of the character/scene. Very, very good stuff. If you'd like a copy, let me know. :)

I saw it referenced when looking for materual, but I couldn't find any copies. I'm definitely interested -- I now want to build a good collection for collecting's sake.

You're nuts. In a good way, but you know, still nuts.
