What's with all this media obsession about the lunar impact planned for tonight? Was no one paying attention when they did this 10 years ago? Neat, but hardly a big deal.

Also put into perspective, space activity that happens only once a decade seems noteworthy as well.

Totally fair, and I always encourage interest in what NASA is doing. But the tone of the coverage is much more 'omg they're bombing the moon!!!!' with little context.

Hey, if it bleeds, it leads, and mister...that moon is going DOWN.

Wanted: ethnic slur for people from the moon. Craterheads?

Lunatics.

Oh, no! The moon's going to end up covered with craters at this rate!

The media is a goldfish. It's immediately accessible memory is probably around six months to a year long, maybe five years at the outside.

Also we have a hell of a lot more and worse media than we did ten years ago.

I'd put it more at a range of two days to two years at the outside, myself. Political media maybe two days to six months. Tops.

Honestly, what bugs me more is the misreporting of the science that's supposed to be behind this experiment.

One of the things they're trying to prove is that there's ice in them thar craters. (In really small amounts.) But I hear the news saying things like, "if there's water on the moon, it means we can build permanent bases there".

What if it somehow throws off the astrology?

[identity profile] keystricken.livejournal.com 2009-10-09 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
How could we tell the difference?

Oh, man, I needed that bellylaugh so badly. Thank you!

Unfortunately, I can't take any of the credit (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/amy-ephron/help-save-the-moon_b_313056.html).

I wonder if it has something to do with the recent prominence of moon landing hoax nuts.
