This is cute, but only 14 feet? Who ever listed "14 feet of rope" on their character sheet? I'll stick with my utility belt and its full 50 feet. (Though I really need to make a new one, the Mark II is getting awfully worn out.)

I can see some benefit, I suppose, if the 14' is quick to unwrap and that's all you happen to need, but your 50' really seems superior even beyond size. That bracelet thing seems like the sort of thing one wouldn't wear all the time.

Yeah, I've never actually tested the deployability of my rope, for fear of the pain of getting it all back in. Theoretically, though, I can do it without taking the belt off or compromising its belt-like nature, thanks to the canvas sheath.

Sad but true. I've yet to find an emergency situation which called for 50 feet of rope, and trust me I've been looking for them. I think it's a tragic failure of my lifestyle as much as anything.

That's why we have SETs (http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/setguide.html). If you can't find an emergency, fake one. ;)

Like a very hot member of the Armed Forces who has to ship out the very next day, so you have no time to waste?

I'd stick it on my messenger bag and then forget about it.

Hmm, my everyday-wear belt has finally failed after 14 years of use, and I do have 50' of climbing line right here. Perhaps I should finally join you as part of the group which can always have "50' of rope" written on our character sheets.

Paracord is pretty marginal for supporting human weight, I would fear. I dunno, it's rated for 550 breaking, so guess it'd survive as long as it wasn't fall-arresting, just static load. Would you trust it for human weight? And do you have any good ways to *attach* yourself to it?

That's what I need to learn, knotwork. *sigh*

Was looking at some of the high-performance ropes last BM seasons..Amsteel by Samson is pretty amazing looking stuff. IIRC. Think it comes in different grades/colors.

-B.

I'll go for the obvious comment since no one else has.

One can have plenty of fun with 14' of rope.

14 feet of rope is the kind of thing that ends up on your character sheet when you started with 50 and had to use 36 of it for something.

This isn't rope, though; it's cord. At least if it were on my character sheet I would call it cord.

[identity profile] gfish.livejournal.com 2009-06-25 06:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's pretty marginal as rope, same the line in my belt. But you just can't wear useful lengths of real rope, it's simply too thick. Even with amazing modern fibers. =\

Utility cord of that diameter can support twice my body weight, at least. Not something I'd want to rely on, and almost useless for anything other than a very careful top-belay, but better than nothing in an emergency...
