It's not clear to me that this mitigates the risk of CARS BEING THROWN AT YOU. Especially if irritated pedestrians call Truckzilla in for revenge.

If you ride on the sidewalk, be damned careful anywhere there is a curb-cut: any driveway, any street crossing. Cars are not expecting something that moves as fast as a bike to be on the sidewalk, and they don't watch for it.

Regarding riding on the road, let's face it, this was a crazy freak accident, as unusual as being hit by a falling tree.
