If you ride on the sidewalk, be damned careful anywhere there is a curb-cut: any driveway, any street crossing. Cars are not expecting something that moves as fast as a bike to be on the sidewalk, and they don't watch for it.

Regarding riding on the road, let's face it, this was a crazy freak accident, as unusual as being hit by a falling tree.

Yup, I know it well. I've done both sidewalk and streets. I'll take the sidewalks if I can.
