Today was the Computer Science Graduate Student Association Annual General Meeting.

It got kind of boring after awhile.

So I made a Graham (aka deadbeat) escapement out of cardboard using my Leatherman.



It actually kind of worked, for the parts of the arc I didn't smoosh the teeth in too close together. With proper tools (compass, straightedge, protractor and xacto blade) I think I could actually get one working.

I've tried similar things with Lego, though the gears' teeth are not the optimal shape. But they are selling a saw-like thing in their Indiana Jones series that might work better.

OK, I found a likely-looking gear in this set at Meijer last night, which is a whole lot cheaper:
