Today was the Computer Science Graduate Student Association Annual General Meeting.

It got kind of boring after awhile.

So I made a Graham (aka deadbeat) escapement out of cardboard using my Leatherman.

It actually kind of worked, for the parts of the arc I didn't smoosh the teeth in too close together. With proper tools (compass, straightedge, protractor and xacto blade) I think I could actually get one working.

I've tried similar things with Lego, though the gears' teeth are not the optimal shape. But they are selling a saw-like thing in their Indiana Jones series that might work better.

OK, I found a likely-looking gear in this set at Meijer last night, which is a whole lot cheaper:

and in case Lego doesn't allow hot links:

Maybe that can be the heart of a nice Lego pendulum clock.

That looks suspiciously like something [livejournal.com profile] neuro42 and I made in high school, though that one was made out of plastic. Later I think we cut a rather vicious looking gear out of aluminum instead, but when the escapement became disengaged and the weight fell... Yeah, it was kinda scary...
