Stereocamwhore

We got a shiny new stereo camera in the lab which I've been playing with. Here's a rendering of the pointcloud of me sitting at my desk:

This was using a realtime algorithm, so the output is pretty spotty. If you're willing to spend a couple seconds (or minutes!) per frame, it can get a lot better. This view is offset from the camera, so you can see the big empty gap behind me where I was occluding the camera's view.

Wow, take the camera rendering out of the image and you could sell that as art :D Pretty great choice of colour for the rendering... much better than the usual grayscale :)

I agree with this comment. Make art.

Neat.

Cool!

What can it do with this?

The left image is in the middle, the right image is on either side (I presented it that way so a human could use either stereo viewing preference).

It could probably work pretty well. Nice textured surface, sure looks good when I cross or unfocus my eyes. The problem is rectification -- the algorithms assume perfect alignment of image scanlines. So it might take a lot of tweaking to get them aligned properly. Maybe I'll play with that tonight. I still have the stereo code I wrote for 525 last spring, that should work pretty well. :)

Oh, yeah, rectification was a challenge with those two images--just getting them to the point where they were good enough for my eyeballs was quite a task. Oh, and here's the anaglyph version:
