Som'm I thought of while commuting. Gas tax is a percentage. The government is making money hand over fist too . . .

(I don't think all gas tax is a percentage though, and the government is having to pay out for gas too.)

A friend of mine said that currently the government is getting half of the pump price. I don't know about that, but I know that the fed's main tax is 36.1c a gal. States and counties and cities can add to that, not to mention I think there are several 1-4c secondary taxes on the fed level as well.
