This year for my birthday my wonderful wife got me a beautiful spyglass that I had been lusting over.

I'm tickled pink to have one, and have every intention of carrying it on all future adventures. The question is, should I carry it at other times? It's small enough to wear on my utility belt, replacing the monocular. It has far better optics than the monocular, with variable 10-30x zoom. I'd need to find a better pouch for it, since the one it came with was pretty lame.

The thing is, I don't use the monocular a whole lot, but it is occasionally useful for checking if a bus is the one I want. I'm just not sure I could bring myself to pull out a spyglass in public. And if I'm not going to ever use it, it doesn't belong on the daily utility belt.

So, the question is: Would it be unforgivably pretentious? I hate to be a slave to my social cowardice without good reason.

If it's got at least the aperture of the monocular, there is no reason not to carry it at all times. You never know when you might need to observe the moons of Jupiter
