This year for my birthday my wonderful wife got me a beautiful spyglass that I had been lusting over.

I'm tickled pink to have one, and have every intention of carrying it on all future adventures. The question is, should I carry it at other times? It's small enough to wear on my utility belt, replacing the monocular. It has far better optics than the monocular, with variable 10-30x zoom. I'd need to find a better pouch for it, since the one it came with was pretty lame.

The thing is, I don't use the monocular a whole lot, but it is occasionally useful for checking if a bus is the one I want. I'm just not sure I could bring myself to pull out a spyglass in public. And if I'm not going to ever use it, it doesn't belong on the daily utility belt.

So, the question is: Would it be unforgivably pretentious? I hate to be a slave to my social cowardice without good reason.

Do it!

And let the English see you do it!

You wear a utility belt. Wear the damn spyglass.

It's gorgeous. I vote to wear it, if for no other reason so that you can explain to random passersby how wonderful your wife is.

And no, it wouldn't be unbearably pretentious, unless you were wearing it without having the desire or ability to use it. I suspect that you'll be finding all sorts of useful things to do with it.

Get over the dubiousness and use the thing on those rare occasions where you'd use the monocular. It's soooooooooooooooooo pretty.

If you don't wear it, you'll find yourself in situations where it would have been nice to have.

If you do wear it, you'll find all sorts of times where it may not be necessary, but can be fun and helpful. And, of course, it won't get left behind when a Random Adventure starts soemwhere other than where your spyglass is stored!

Of course, if you wear it everywhere, Count Olaf is SO going to figure out that you've joined the VFD.

arr, matey. ye should carry it :)

no, seriously -- life is short; be a character!

"avast, i see the x13 acomin' o'er the horizon -- ready the cannons!" is what *i* would rather hear from someone sharing the bus shelter with me than, "have you seen the x13 yet???"

Ooo, love the inscription. Looking forward to seeing it in person.

Definitely wear it in place of the monocular. I don't believe it would be any more pretentious to use it than it would be to use the monocular.

Wear it! What True Gadget Lover(TM) wouldn't?

I vote with the "wear it" crowd... and if you'll tell me its diameter and compacted length, I could make a cozy custom-sized felted wool caddy for it, in your choice of color(s), which could be available for you by OryCon.

If it's got at least the aperture of the monocular, there is no reason not to carry it at all times. You never know when you might need to observe the moons of Jupiter

*I* think you should wear it because you look OMG SO CUTE while using it. :)

What good is a tool if you don't have it when you need it? And, this is a very stylish tool. (What does the inscription say? I can't make it out from the glare in the photo.)

I think you should yield to the unanimous wisdom of your friends.
