I was just trying to explain to niac why it's pronounced the way it is.
I thought this FAQ (http://www.olywa.net/cook/faq.htm) was great: "The proper way to pronounce the word is "gooey-duck", not "gee-oh-duck". Unlike learning the proper way to pronounce words such as "Cthulhu" and "YHWH", this admittedly does not entail risk to your mortal soul."
Have you ever seen the Evergreen State College Geoduck Fight Song (http://www.everything2.org/index.pl?node_id=1163097)?
Evergreen College is... special that way. They're best known for not giving out grades. The students are best known for using large amounts of drugs. (Before I'm attacked by others reading this, I've heard good things about the school as well, these are just the common perceptions.)
As for the etymology, Merriam-Webster claims: Lushootseed (Salishan language of the Puget Sound region) gwíd&q
Evergreen sound a bit like Hampshire college over in Amherst. My favorite bit about them is that the bookstore sells Hampshire Varsity Football shirts, when, of course, they have no football team at all.
