Oh wow oh wow oh wow, I have a new geek tourism destination I must visit sometime: The Falkirk Wheel. A very unique and beautiful alternative to locks for moving boats up and down.

For whatever reason, a lot of barge canals in England and a few in the United States in the 1850's used elevators: gigantic bronze-lined wooden tanks on tracks that could be winched down, loaded, and up, empty. (one-way travel only.)
