1. So, what'cha been up to?
Moved to Seattle for college. Graduated with a BS in CS from UW 3 years ago. (Gah, I can't believe I've been graduated for three years. I still strongly self-identify as a student. Of course, as you'll see, my lifestyle hasn't changed much.) Worked at a crappy dotcom for about 11 months, which slowly became a horrible nightmare. Bad work environment and a complete lack of motivation. Finally ended up not working there, an act that was part being fired and part being laid off. Ended up getting my current job offered to me later that very day.
xmurf had been doing sysadmin type work for a UW medical research group and wanted someone halfway competent to do the programming side of things. That was a bit over two years ago and it's been a great job ever since. Very low stress, except for the occasional deadline. And as long as I get things done on time, no one care how or when or where I work. Plus I get to brag about helping to guard the city against bioterrorism.
In other news, I've been doing some filmmaking, working on a freefall robot, generally getting into machining and physical fabrication of various types. Filmmaking has been the biggest, over the last year, but I'm probably going to focus more on machining this summer. The robot project is getting insane and I have this shiny lathe at home I haven't used hardly at all... I'm thinking of making a teeny tiny little liquid fuel rocket engine. It will have to be small to fit on the lathe. And, well, should it fail in a dramatic fashion, smaller is better anyway.
2. What is the book/television show/radio show that has influenced you the most? Why?
Probably How the Mind Works by Steven Pinker. For the last few years, anyway.
3. You're stuck on a deserted island. What's the one thing you'd like there with you, except something you could escape with, or a person?
If we're talking absolute bare minimums, then my Leatherman multitool. But as the original component of my utility belt I always have it with me anyway. Assuming I'm not stripped naked in the desert-island-depositation process, I would choose... a good natural source of obsidian. Not that I have any idea how to form obsidian blades, but I'd have a lot of time to experiment. If I didn't die in the first month, that is.
4. What is your favorite memory from high school? Your least favorite?
Oh man.
Good memories: Sitting on the lawn at lunch with the group. Enjoying the position of being the weird guy that could talk back to Mr. Manfred when everybody else was scared of him. The fake campaign posters. Handing out copies of my satirical Declaration of Ignorance essay and getting one handed back to me marked up with poorly spelled insults.
Bad memories: Getting suspended for setting the gym on fire. Just about everything involving the rest of the student body. Developing panic attacks as a reaction to crowds.
Pride-in-adversity memory: Being able to take a slushball in the face without wincing or blinking or reacting in any way.
5. Okay, I've been wanting to know this for like 8 years.. How did you come up with the name Grendelfish?
Not very interesting, I'm afraid. I've always had a love for the Beowulf mythos. When I first started to connect to MOO type places, Grendel was always taken. One day I added the -Fish for no good reason. Possibly I was influences by the grendel creatures in Legacy of Heorot, but it is a bit of a stretch. But I'm quite pleased with it. I like being so easily found on google.
6. A huge box with a big red ribbon is delivered to your door. What's inside?
A new fileserver with a terabyte RAID and a DDS-4 backup tape drive. Boring, but it would make me very happy.
7. We used to theorize on the origins of the universe. What are your current thoughts on this subject?
Nothing special, I'm afraid. I try to keep up in physics but cosmology has always been beyond me. As bad of a habit as it is, I tend to blindly accept textbooks on the subject.
8. What's your Useless Mutant Superpower?
I can use auto-hypnosis techniques to stop hiccups. If I was going to choose a comic book style UMS, I'd go with never needing to sleep. Not actually useless, but it wouldn't help much trying to fight crime.

no subject
Did he have a tendency to hate everyone and an interest in bizarre/arcane knowledge?
Has he since killed himself?
