Is there a catchy term for the urban mythology of recreational drug substitutes? Like dried banana peels and licking toads? I'm thinking something like "schoolyard pharmacology" or something, but that's kind of awkward. If there isn't a good term for it, there should be.

With tongue in cheek I suggest homeotripping.

You win, as you do so often.

I believe the usual term is something like "improvised drug"1 from the perspective of use. As for the mythology and the type of meme, I haven't encountered any terms that stand out, other than perhaps elaborate phrases around the aforementioned.

1: I feel like there's a similar term that's even more encompassing and widely-used, but I'm drawing a blank. I wish that it were "ersatz psychopharmacology" but that's almost certainly not in use. Captures the improvisation-in-lieu aspect quite well, along with the inferior nature of the substitutes.

I kind of like "schoolyard pharmacology", actually. Its slight clunkiness is charming.

I thought licking toads was real?

So's smoking banana peels.
However, in both cases, the results might not be what the person expected.
