The Grace of Tears

In September of 2003 we competed in our second 48 hour film contest. Theme: passion, prop: strainer, line of dialog: "That bug's on a suicide mission". We decided to do a passion play, using a weird story fragment I had jotted down in my ideas file, of someone being tortured by math. I had no idea what that meant, but it had a certain resonance. I found the title in one of my favorite sources of story titles, particularly appropriate in this case: The Malleus Maleficarum.

Staring [livejournal.com profile] tithonium and [livejournal.com profile] jhitchin with scoring by [livejournal.com profile] spinnerin_ftw, shot in Marty's basement. We blacked out the windows with tar paper and lit it entirely with a set of cheap work site flood lamps that I picked up in the morning. Closest to a real sound stage as we ever came. It was shot using a rented GL2 which finally fixed the background audio problems by providing a real balanced audio input.

Of the 10 contest movies selected to show at the film festival, it came in as 10th. I don't think the audience or judges really got it. The crowd at the Norwescon fan festival liked it a lot more, and even appreciated the commentary on the 5th postulate. So that was cool.

Primary lesson from this movie? [livejournal.com profile] tithonium is pretty when he is suffering.

And that's the cleanest our basement has been ever since...

My theory on the film festival judging is that they don't like anything lacking fart jokes as a thematic element.

I like to think of myself as his beautician.
