Apostle

Midgard Studios' camera emergency was solved when one was loaned to us late in the summer of 2002. At that point, I had heard about the upcoming Port Townsend Film Festival's 48 hour movie contest (more on that next week). With the new camera there was nothing stopping us from entering, except it seemed like a very high stress situation in which to be playing with new equipment. So I took a silly word game I had played on a long bus ride once and turned it into the script for Apostle. It served nicely as practice for the contest the following month. It was shot in the park above the I-90 tunnel in Seattle. In this as well as the following piece, you can see the influence of watching a lot of Buffy right about this time. I was very interested in trying to capture that sense of witty banter and (later) the combination of humor with horrible situations.

I guess I would call this film "gently amusing." And I was ready for the heliopause sequence.

Actually, I think it's a good slice of what everyday life ought to be like.

"if you married someone from the oort cloud, you'd have heliopause in-laws."

Fishy had to teach me how to pronounce oort cloud. :)

I was expecting something more along the lines that the employee contracts for the ground controllers of the Voyager spacecraft would have provisions for a bonus if Voyager made it to interstellar space, in other words a heliopause clause.

They may be regretting getting their contracts worded that way, because it's becomeing clear that while Voyager is approaching interstellar space, there may not be a clearly defined moment when it crosses. So they may not get their bonus due to heliopause clause flaws...

Very cute!

As with all of the shorts you've posted, I find that I can't watch this without wondering how my life would be different if I'd spent my college years with film & theater people instead of art & music people. It would be the most natural thing to say "Hey, I've got a neat idea, grab the camcorder and meet me outside Boyer at 3" (or something like that) but here in this reality, it's completely unthinkable.
