Did anyone else have the moment, when they were a kid, that they suddenly wanted to stay with the adults and talk at the table after a big holiday meal instead of running off to play? I think that was my first time I was really conscious of growing up.

For me, as one of the oldest cousins, after the meal was always the time for helping to wash the china and silverware with whichever of my aunts and uncles were doing it that year, even as young as seven or eight. But I was very fond of that ritual, and felt special for being old enough and careful enough to help...
