New Attoparsec blog update with a demo video and more drive wheel bracket stuff. But I'm going to inline the video here as well, because I'm just that egotistical. And I can. So there.
Yeah, this! Maybe get some metal ceiling tile designs and stencil them on in a bunch of different sizes (designs, not actual metal tiles) or! wait! no! I got a better idea. Top view of rails and pilings! So looking down from on it would be like looking down through a glass-bottomed actual kalamazoo. Spirit rails!
<snerk> You're lucky he didn't throw anything else at you. ^_^
I like my spirit rails idea tho'. I mean, I'd go even farther - I'd make it like Spirited Away's submerged rails, so you look down and you see fish and railroad tracks. It'd take a really thick layer of clearcoat to make it through the event, but I think it'd be great.
Oh man it's way too late for this (not to mention the crazy difficulty) but y'know what'd be awesome? If it actually was glass-topped but instead of looking through to the ground you looked through an oversized pinball field with an oversized pinball and bumpers and stuff. And the bumpers and stuff would work and would increment a fare box, like a score card.
I'd better stop now before he throws things at me.
I'll probably paint it with some kind of thick floor paint, maybe a kind of teakish color. I'm thinking of wrapping the perimeter with fake tin cornice stripping, with square medalions on the 4x4 ends. Need to be careful it's all easily dis/reassemblable. There is a lot that comes before that, though, like the EL-wire I'm going to need to drive it at night. And the horn, and the wrapped leather hand grips, and maybe some more decorative wrought iron on the pump arm itself...
It would be cheap and relatively easy to do period-appropriate rolled-grain finishes to make it look like planks, or to add other effects. It'd mostly only be visible during the day and (again) clearcoating would be a good idea, but it wouldn't add any weight or assembly difficulty.
