Today the Jacob's Ladder went on display at, you guessed it, The Night Kitchen!

It's rather high up, you might notice, because unpleasant things would happen if fingers got caught up in the chain drive. Just to be sure, I added a warning sign.

Oh Helvetica, is there nothing you can't make look official?

Hee hee hee, it's a beautiful, beautiful machine, but I think the warning sign is my favourite part. Did you draw the squashy hand?

I first saw the hand at [livejournal.com profile] jwz's journal, although I'm sure it predates him. Evocative, ain't it?

It's a standard industrial hazard icon, one of my favorites. I've seen it relabeled the "don't fist androids" icon.

Oooh, I'm afraid that sign is just begging the questions "Would it really do that to a hand?" "What sort of hand-like substances are nearby?" "How strong is that motor, anyway?"

I myself am entirely too well-behaved to inflict the process of answering them on a piece of art. But the questions remain. ;P

I think it would have a good chance of severing a finger. The chain is fairly tight and the motor both beefy and geared way down. I really have no desire to find out just what would happen.
