Last Starfighter remix

Free idea for people who want to make a name doing computer graphics: Redo all the exterior space scenes in The Last Starfighter. Someone who has the skills and is dedicated should be able to do those 27 minutes of video in a few months of work. And they could do it on their personal machine, instead of the Cray that was originally used. Release the whole thing Phantom Edit style, and you should get quite a bit of free publicity. Despite it being such a cheesy movie, I think there is a lot of nostalgia for it in certain crowds. Do a good job and people would love it.

A few months? Maybe if you were on a team of people dedicated to the cause. It can take one person a year to come up with five minutes of decent cg.

Depends exactly how good you want to make it, of course. But these are very sparse scenes -- which is exactly why it was the first major use of CGI in a movie. No skin, no hair, no motion capture, no compositing, no uncanny valley. Just ships shooting each other in space.
