My laptop had been running increasingly hot over the last few months. The fan was running, and I could feel air moving, so it didn't seem like something I could fix. Then, over this last weekend, it started running stupid slow. Having had some problems like that before, I spent a lot of time defragging the drive and messing with page table settings. (Which was excellent timing with the presentation, let me tell you.) This didn't really help. Eventually I realized that, woah, wait a minute -- it wasn't running hot anymore. The fan wasn't even on. So I shut it down and cracked it open, and found about a cubic centimeter of densely packed lint in between two of the blades of the fan. Which was extremely satisfying to remove, and ever since it's been a completely different machine. I can have a process entirely slamming one core and be watching a movie and it's only warm and the fan isn't in overdrive. And everything is faster! Solutions just don't come much better than that: sudden deductive leap, taking a device apart, pulling gunk out of something to make it move better, no replacement parts to be bought, immediate and radical improvement. Just... wonderful.

A drawing that [livejournal.com profile] hsifyppah added to a cupcake to-go box: Chess cupcake ponders his next move. I mean to send it to Randall.

So, I'm kind of done with grad school? Except after the big thesis/presentation boss fight, there is this bullshit collection of plot coupon sidequests. I currently have 6 out of 8 random signatures proving I don't have books checked out, have returned keys, have scheduled my accounts for deletion, and don't owe the Coffee Czar any money. (Seriously.) But I did get the really important signatures today, and handed in the paperwork which will allow me to create an account to submit my thesis electronically to the Faculty of Graduate Studies in a couple of days, once someone transfers all the information by hand. Until I've done that, I can't consider myself really done. This means I might be able to move south this Saturday.

Good job. You have better followthrough than I do. :) Well done.
