Slow Day

I only had two real revelations today, and only one is about DC.

  1. I am an idiot.

  2. DC is like a giant airport.

Any building you might want to go into, as a tourist, requires a full security screening. Metal detectors. No knives.

Of course, I carry knives and other sharp things as standard operating procedure. Carrying a knife around a post-9/11 DC roughly 30 hours before we got to war with Iraq... is kind of dumb. I'm an idiot. In my defense, I was going to the Library of Congress. The only 'what has he got in his pocketses' concern I'm used to is magnetic media that would set off the theft prevention in the Spokane libraries.

So today had a very poor walking/tourism ratio. But I did get a surprise present for someone... and if you're worried I'm talking about you, I'm not.

DC is like a giant airport in many ways. It's an in-between place. Most of the people there are transient; DC is a layover city, a stepping stone along their path. It's a giant tourist attraction, a city many people visit but few live in. Even the people who work in DC seldom live there. It's not even in a state- DC residents are the only US citizens without real representation.

I could go on at length, but I'll spare you :)

A very good comparison. Much better architecture than your average airport -- other than that hideous FBI building, of course.

So...not a sysadmin town, huh? Thanks for the warning; I'll make sure Husband leaves the leathermen/knife tools at home if he tags along.
