Homeland Security Securing the Homeland

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. government officials are discussing the current five-color terror threat alert system to determine whether a higher level of risk should be added before a possible war with Iraq, government sources tell CNN.

They want to subdivide the orange terror state so they have more room to raise it when Gulf War II starts without actually going to red. Instead of admitting that this means the terror state is already too high, they've decided to further granularize the model.

I'm glad they're taking this bold step. It makes the argument of 'does the modern political climate make you think more of Orwell or of Kafka' much more compelling.

It makes me think of Rand. It's like a political version of the social idiocy in Fountainhead. "Say, folks, who's got a five-cent stamp with a picture of George Washington on it?"
