UDLS: Mayan Glyphs

Last Friday I gave my fifth UnDistinguished Lecture Series presentation, this time on Mayan glyphs. Here are the slides, if you're interested. As usual, the slides aren't very text heavy, but they should be easier to follow than the crayon one last year.

Man, can that chap Yuri Knorozov brood at high olympic level. That's a frown to cut wood with at fifty paces.

Aw, I was hoping mine would be in there. :D

I'd never looked up a picture of him before. What a gem to find!

I never did come up with a version of it I was satisfied with. =\

Massive Soviet Frown Technology!

Mind you, if anyone has reason to frown, it's soviet scientists from the fifties, given they had survived the thirties and forties as undergrads and postgrads. For a brief summary of the source of that sort of frown, read "Five Billion Vodka Bottles to the Moon: Tales of a Soviet Scientist"
by Iosif Shkolovsky

It's both brutally funny and just plain brutal.

Regarding slide 5:

I'd once heard someone say that their numbering system was base 12. I see that this is not the case. Damn urban myths.

Awesome. I would love to give a talk that fun and informal someday.

I have a necklace with my name spelled out in Mayan glyphs, with each letter equated to a specific symbol. I'm aware this is tourist-trap nonsense, but it's pretty.
