Hint to politicians: Pay your taxes! And check the immigration status of your nannies!

Seriously, why are these two things so hard to do? You never see interesting nomination problems, just tired variations on stuff like this. I want someone to go down in flames for being a Lichtensteinian spy, or running a speakeasy in their Senate office, or jerrymandering their district to be the shape of an aroused camel. I don't think that is too much to ask of our public servants.

Can we please just call elections when seats come up? Please? I'm stunned at how badly both the NY and IL selections went. Even if watching Rachel Maddow interview Blagojevich is great television. (Which it's not, if it makes you want to pour bleach in your ears.)

Think this points to just how common and mundane illegal household help and tax evasion is. I suspect that politicians are not anymore dishonest about that than their other economic-class-peers. If anything, one would hope they would be more cautious, given potential for eventual scrutiny. Of course, one could instead make a deduction about the prudence/intelligence of politicians.

How does one go about checking the immigration status of someone else? Do you just ask them to bring in their papers for you to look at, or something?

Well, in theory, one is supposed to make one's employees fill out an I-9, which does, indeed, require them to present their papers.

As someone who has worked as a day-laborer and a cleaner, I find the thought of those of us in that economic bracket being asked to present such paperwork rather amusing

Yup. I-9 is supposed to be accompanied by valid ID (passport, state ID or DL) and a Social Security card. Every employer in the US is supposed to have one on file (with copies of the ID and SS card) for every one of their employees.
