I noticed at the end of the credits for Hellboy II a disclaimer stating that the portrayal of smoking is for artistic purposes only, and is not to be taken as an endorsement. Interesting.

Liquid smoke is weird stuff. It's like 3 days of (car) camping concentrated in a little bottle! I had no idea the name was so literal. It's actually condensed smoke! I had always assumed it was some cheesy synthetic flavoring.

I'm staying up tonight to start another Ondarra story. I've been meaning to for a few weeks, but a plot only solidified this morning. Major historical inspirations for this one: Charles Babbage, The Mechanical Turk, and maybe a bit of John Harrison.

Yeah, liquid smoke is good stuff -- I now make my own (from cherrywood, usually), using the method Alton Brown demonstrated on Good Eats:

Start your bbq or smoker

funnel the smoke output through a bunt pan or similar

Put a bowl over the bunt pan, with some ice on top to aid condensation

Collect the smokey goodness in the bunt pan, and use or bottle for future use.

Hmm, smoked Ice Cream. Could be good. Could be horrible. Must try it the next time I have the smoker going.

Yeah, the smoking thing is becoming more common — in the past few months I've seen different versions of it on half a dozen films. The version I've seen most just says that the producers did not accept any money from anyone for the portrayal of tobacco use.

The thing that also got my attention was a rating blurb... as in, they'll state the rating and in the same box, give the explanation.

I don't remember the movie, but for this one it was something like:

PG: For depicting scenes of tobacco use.

So I finally added you :O

Anti-tobacco lobbyists have been trying to ban smoking in movies for a very long time. Looks like movies are starting to throw them a bone.

Even though I don't support 'Big Tobacco' whatsoever, I couldn't imagine a world where the cool characters don't smoke.

Heya!

Yeah, I can't see it either. Which kind of annoys me, that I've been programmed to that extent. But there it is.
