Today was B-Day! After not shaving for a year and 6 days, I finally got rid of my facial growth:

The beard was fun, but not really me in the end. And it was a pain to take care of. But it was a nice souvenir of the Mackenzie while it lasted, I gave it an honest go, and I can hold my head high.

To make a bit of an event out of it, I went to this charmingly old school barbershop at Hastings and Nanaimo and had it removed with a straight razor. They did the hot towels and lather and aftershave and powder and everything. Pretty fun, actually. I guess I can see the appeal of the whole spa thing.

Also, that sounds fun. I should get a professional shave one of these decades.
Maybe I'll start doing that when I turn 50 and take up smoking a pipe

If you've gotta shave it all off, you may as well do it in the most pleasurable way possible. The next time I have to shave for a show, I'm going to The Art of Shaving store in Bellevue Square and do it right for once.

Ooooh, that sounds like fun. Pricey, but not exorbitant...

I'm thinking Real Soon Now I'm gonna get somebody to do me a quasi-reverse-mohawk and get rid of all that stray fuzz right on top....

Dude. You look spooky with a beard, like a viking on shore leave.

That's not the best picture of it, just last minute documentation. I had just showered, so my hair isn't as frizzy as it usually is. I also hadn't bothered to trim the beard this week, since I knew it was getting the axe.

Yeah, beards are just not for some people. I tried mine back in college, but I got rid of it after four months, because it just looked terrible. It was really bushy and wiry, and didn't get along with face and hair at all.

Oh gads, now I won't have a prayer of recognizing you!!!

But then, you haven't seen ME in over 5 years, so if we DO bump into each other again, maybe it won't matter?

While the beard did look much better in March than it does in that picture, I did have a moment, seeing the newly clean-shaven you, of thinking, "OH! *There* you are!!"

So, uh, I tend to concur with your conclusion that it isn't really you, in the end:)

PS Is it just me or do you look really tired in both those pictures?

We had lunch after he got it shaved off, and I have to admit that I had the same reaction. And thought about it for a few seconds, and realized, it was like seeing Fish circa 2005 again. :D

It's weird how, apparently, my mental image of Fish never got the beard update.

You might wanna clarify your subject line; *I* got the D-Day joke, but Tony asked me this morning whether I'd called to wish you a happy birthday. ;)

(He's probably not the only one who read it that way.)

I do think you look younger without the facial hair. And, belatedly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
