Modern life

Things I shouldn't have to reboot yet still have needed to recently:
  • Cell phone -- This one is borderline, because it's a smartphone. I wouldn't mind so much if it obviously froze or bluescreened, but sometimes it just stops getting signal until I reboot. That's pretty lame.

  • Microwave -- The microwave that came with the apartment is cheap, underpowered, and prone to ignoring input until I power cycle it. Very lame.

  • Alarm clock -- Recently my clock has taken to ignoring the alarm settings and just going off randomly, creating false negatives AND false positives. Last night, after fighting with insomnia some more, I finally got to sleep at 3:30. And then the alarm started going off, despite being set for 7:30. Snooze worked, but otherwise I couldn't turn it off, since it wasn't on to begin with. I finally had to power cycle it. Lame to a degree beyond my command of the English language.

reboot the car

I have been driving a car that once in a while doesn't allow me to use the turn signals or windshield wiper. Once I turn the car off and then turn it on again, they work just fine.

I shudder to think what'll happen when cars are fly-by-wire.

I have to reboot my (not smart) phone every so often because the ring tone midi files become corrupted. Instead of ringing or alarming, I get a brief silence. Reboot, and everything is back to normal.

Hey, that's your fellow professionals' work!

-B.

You know what time it is?

Time to get a new clock. ;-)

Seriously, that's just way beyond lame.

Of course the rebooting sucks in a serious an (only somewhat) explicable way. But the alarm clock: that one's just out to get you. Did you accidentally program it with AI?

The only thing to do with an appliance like that is to take it to a purple-haired freak with some liquid nitrogen and go to town.

I tried re-booting my PDA, which has forgotten how to sound an alarm, but it didn't help. :(

Your lame list reminded me of the skit show "Almost Live"; did you ever see it?

Sorry your list is for real; that's petrifying in a peat-bog of lameness.
