I played Puerto Rico tonight. I didn't like it nearly as much as Power Grid, which we played last week. I might have to get a copy of that, though how something with fake money and bidding can be so engaging I don't quite understand. The game design is just so elegant.

I have played Puerto Rico during "glunches" (gaming lunches) with ged, zompist, davely, drishta_ro and others.

We enjoyed it but had more fun with games like Web of Power, Carcassonne, and even Age of Empires III the board game, which plays like Puerto Rico in many ways.

As to elegance, I personally like Antike. The dynamics of the wheel and the economy make it quite elegant.

I've played both Puerto Rico and Powergrid a lot. I suspect the optimal strategy for Powergrid is relatively apparent, and it looses out in its fun once everyone realizes it.

My current favorite though is Tigris and Euphrates.

Was that the first time you played Puerto Rico? The game has grown on me and most of my gaming group. The learning curve doesn't seem to ever level off, though, which means that playing it with people significantly better or worse than you can be frustrating.
