book-and-movie squee

A couple of months ago I happened to pick up a copy of A Voyage for Madmen, about the 1968 Golden Globe race for the first nonstop solo circumnavigation. It turned out to be a great book, with the details of the race being far more dramatic than anything that really happened deserves to be. A++, would read again. And I kept thinking how it should be made into a movie, because it was so crazy dramatic.

I forced [livejournal.com profile] adularia to read it on the canoe trip, and it became a common obsession. There wasn't much else to talk about, after all. You can only speculate about coming weather systems so many times a day.

So, I was at the Varsity this week, seeing Labyrinth with [livejournal.com profile] koruja. A trailer started... and it was for Deep Water. Which is about the Golden Globe race. With interviews of the (surviving) original people. Turns out it was made last year and is just now getting a limited US release. I'm freaking out! I'm going to have to drag a bunch of people to it next month.

Forced me? You know me, I hate boats...

To everyone else: it really is that good. I think we liked it partly since it was the most interesting thing going, and partly because it gives words to what it's like to be cut off from civilization.
