I finalized the gear layout last night and finally ordered parts.

The larger gear on the left is the drive gear, hooked up to the RC servo. With the given gear ratio and the range I'm seeing on the servo, the lens gears should have a ~70 degree range, which will be pretty good. The 3 small gears just hold the large lens gears in place, while the 2 medium gears serve to link the two lenses, keeping them counter-rotating for optimum awesomeness.

This is just the gear layout, not showing any frame details. Because brass gears turn out to be omg expensive, I'm going to prototype with molded nylon first. I'll probably prototype the frame in a similar way, just to make sure the layout works, and get an idea about how the earpieces will have to go. I don't want to bother cutting out the final brass frame until I'm sure the design is final.

I'm really enjoying hand drafting the plans. No CAD, just D! Seems rather fitting to be keeping it oldschool.
