I now have $230 worth of maps courtesy of Energy, Mines and Resources Canada (Énergie, Mines et Ressources Canada), spanning 10 degrees of latitude and 15 degrees of longitude. They show rapids, pingos, airports labeled only 'condition unknown', abandoned villages, a delta the size of North Ireland, and 1700 kilometers of soon-to-be-paddled river. It is an embarrassment of cartographic riches.

(I also have a 12v charger for my digital camera battery and freshly resoled boots. Today has been filled with materialistic pleasures.)

I'd like to see how the charger works out.

That's pretty cool. Are you going to use a satellite phone to provide us with updates of your journey?

We'll have one along for emergencies, but I'm not going to pay Iridium rates for anything else. Plus, kind of defeats the purpose of getting that isolated just to call back and chat with people.
