Grad school

I just officially accepted UBC's offer.

So, yeah, it's really happening. I'm going to grad school. In Vancouver. To study robotics. For lack of any other words: ZOMG.

Yaaay! Hope you find it's a terrific program and have a terrific time up there. At least you'll be close enough to still come visit occasionally, right? Was really good to see you at Norwescon.

Congratu-goddamn-lations! I'm jealous. And sad, 'cause you'll be, like, a gone unit along with [livejournal.com profile] vixyish.

That is, indeed, some ZOMG-worthy news. Is it weird that I have a vague "oh, they're moving, I'll miss them" sense, even though we've only met once? Hopefully you'll be keeping us updated here.

Will it be hard giving up the Burrow, or are you ready to move on? And how long is this grad program?

[identity profile] zanfur.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Congrats!

[identity profile] vixyish.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
It'll probably be harder for me to give up the Burrow than Fishy. I'm pretty sure he's tired of hitting his head on the basement ceiling. ;)

[identity profile] vixyish.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, go see my journal; I'll be a round unit for a while, at least.

[identity profile] gfish.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 09:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been itching for a change for a while now. I've lived in Seattle for 11 years, and I'm starting to feel very provincial, having lived in the same state my entire life. BC is still adjacent, but I think it scores extra for being a different country. :)

That said, moving out of the Burrow is going to be a huge pain, if only because of the 1500 pounds of printing press in the basement. (I'll be posting more details about my insane summer moving plans later, but they include a canoe and being functionally homeless for 2 months.) There is no way I'm going to have the same kind of shop space in Vancouver.

The way UBC arranges things is that you first get a Masters, which is 2 years. (This seems to be the standard at Canadian universities, as compared to the US where you often end up directly in the PhD program.) I'm interested in continuing on for a PhD, which is another 4-lol years, but I don't have to make that decision anytime soon.

Muahaha. I better get cracking, then.

oh yeah, and congratulations, but you knew that. :)

[identity profile] niac.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That's pretty cool. When are you moving?

[identity profile] niac.livejournal.com 2007-04-09 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
And to reply to my own reply, are you going to be selling any of your tools?

Congrats!
