The NFL just claimed that any 'description or account' of this broadcast required their permission or it was violation of their copyright.

Luckily they didn't say anything about descriptions or accounts of their breathtaking, unilateral expansion of copyright. So this post should be okay.

Edit: Okay, so apparantly this is nothing new. (Shows how often I watch sports broadcasts.) It's still crazy and ridiculous.

I thought that was part of the standard verbiage you hear on any sports broadcast. I think it just means no play-by-play.

Yeah, that's standard. AFAIK it means what Wendy says, no complete play by play accounts or transcribing the whole broadcast.

I'm pretty sure MLB does it too.

It is indeed standard verbage. It also applies to news media accounts of the game. All of the newspapers, TV networks, what have you that post any kind of account or analysis of the game have to sign a licensing deal with the NFL.

I haven't heard of them trying to enforce the licensing rules on bloggers yet, but I suppose they could try if they wanted to do so.

And yes, MLB and the NBA use similar copyright statements.
