Off to the hypobaric chamber in a couple of minutes. Whee, hypoxia!

What's hypoxia and what is this chamber?

And BTW, I found your entry through http://www.livejournal.com/stats/latest.bml .

Hypoxia - state of not enough oxygen in your bloodstream. Not to be confused with the state of not enough blood in your alcohol stream, though the effects can be remarkably similar in the stupid-giggly-uncoordinated-black-out-die way.

Hypobaric chamber - where they pump the air out to simulate the pressurized plane losing pressurization at altitudes, so you get a real taste of the deadly thing down on the ground in safe, controlled conditions - and therefore can recognize and react to this emergency if it happens.

Have fun!

The above is an excellent explanation. In my case, I was taking it as a prerequisite for flying this robot (http://depts.washington.edu/gyre/) on the Weightless Wonder (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vomit_Comet) next Wednesday.

Hypoxia is fun! (For me, anyway. Individual reactions vary, but it's often much like being drunk.)
