11 hours and 106 miles later and I'm in Centralia.

Way more tandems than recumbents, which I don't get. Of the recumbents, over-seat-steering is far more popular than under-seat-steering, which I don't get either.

A partially faired, inline tandem recumbent tricycle with Ackerman steering is a damned fine sight.

Best 'bikes' seen today: a giant unicycle and a homemade adult Big Wheel.

Homemade bigwheel! That's awesome!

I think people new to 'bents are more comfortable with over-the-seat?

But what about TANDEM RECUMBENTS? :)
Tuesday, July 18th, 2006 07:13 am (UTC)
Tandem recumbents go 200 miles per hour and fly through the air!

Nine miles an hour?

I mean, STP is quite cool, but... are recumbents just really slow?

I think it's more a matter of pacing yourself. Fit people can do 20 for 1 hour, more like 17 for 2 hours, and it drops off from there.

I guess miles are pretty big. My mental conversion acuity drops off the longer I'm home, and I've been here for a few months now.

Yeah, a couple things you need to remember:
  1. That included maybe 90 minutes of rest breaks.
  2. I was carrying 35 pounds of camping gear as a test of my bike-packing capabilities.
  3. I am, actually, a rather slow biker, upright or 'bent.

Also see my reply to random.

That's a lot of gear, too.

When did you leave Seattle? We left at ~0615. Wondering if I passed you on my way to Centralia.

I had to bike down from north Seattle and had some technical problem with my rack, so I didn't get through the start line until 6:50. You were almost certainly ahead of me the entire way.

I got passed by maybe 3 recumbents. Got passed by lots of tandems. Not even the faired 'bents were able to keep pace, and I wasn't driving /that/ hard. Averaged 17.0 mph over the two days (not including rests). I was actually rather surprised.

That is pretty impressive, over 200.. 210, is it? miles.

I must attempt it one of these days.

210 is my personal distance, since I had 6 miles to bike before even getting to the start line.
