local politics

So I just picked up a rumor that Jim McDermott is looking at retiring soonishly, maybe in 2008. Furthermore, Ron Sims might be looking at a run for the nomination should that happen. I'd be kind of sad to see McDermott gone; he's such a wonderful kook. But I would love to see Ron Sims replace him. He's by far my favorite local politician, and it would be great to see what he could do in Congress.

I can see his campaign now.

"Ron Sims. Making New Orleans politics look good."

Okay, so I personally don't like him.

Heh. I've spoken with McDermott once or twice, and his motivations don't seem crazy when you hear his side of the story. He's a left-liberal in a safe seat; if anything, he hasn't taken political advantage of that safety as well as he might have.

What do you like about Sims?

I'm pretty extremely left myself, I just think that he has isolated himself by being too outspoken. It has limited what he can get done politically, since Dems from more moderate districts aren't going to want to be too closely associated with him.

Every time I've heard Sims speak I've been impressed with how competant and knowledgable he is. He's a good public speaker and can stand up for what he believes in without sounding like a raving liberal. Combine that with politics I agree with and I get pretty excited.
