I think I've found my next hardware project: SpokePOV, a programmable persistence of vision kit for mounting on bike spokes. Cheap, too.

Oh my. I want the Pac-Man one. But I'm afraid it'd cause accidents on the bike path, with people craning to look.

I bet if you installed those, then bought another gross of them and carried a few around with you everywhere you went on your bike, you could make a mint reselling them to people who saw your bike and wanted to join the fun.

Hrm, I wonder what the chances are of finding people that way who would want to buy them in kit form? Certainly no one would buy them if I sold them assembled and charged for the labor...

I think the chances of you being able to sell kits to many, many people who got excited looking at your bike would be very high. The chances of them actually installing the things? Much lower. Much like the ratio of people who buy home exercise equipment to the people who actually use it.

maaaaaaaaan I've been wanting to do one of those ever since Boyce pointed me at this clock (http://www.bobblick.com/techref/projects/propclock/propclock.html).

[livejournal.com profile] xmurf pointed out that it needs to be bluetooth programmable, so you can change the design from your PDA.

My revision of the blick POV involved an IR link. Wireless is MUCH nicer. If you had bluetooth you could potentially link an entire group of bikes with a graphics system for bannering.

I was thinking of things that would be fun to do even without networking. Cycle through time and temp. Have a design that moves proportionally to your current speed. Display your trip mileage. But networking opens up all kinds of crazy things. Current geodetic coordinates. Stock prices. Headlines. Have an SMS gateway to let other people set the message.
