Argh, my brain has been eaten by the idea of doing The Mongol Rally next year.

Fishy, before you try something like that, you need to know how to take a car apart and put it back together with a paper clip. With all due respect, I don't think you're ready unless you've been holding out on me.

Well, my brother doesn't know how to do that so much either. . .

I could manage pretty well, particularly on a dirt-simple small car like an old Beetle. Which is exactly the kind of car I would choose for something like this. And from all reports, it isn't mechanical skill that gets you through.

Not all old beetles are small enough, bear in mind.

Oh, pish. As the FAQ says, "The Mongol Rally is about adventure not about cars. The less you know the more fun you will have."

I think you should do it. And you should talk [livejournal.com profile] randomdreams into coming with you.

Don't you think there's a rule against bringing him?

If not, there will be next time. :)

They don't seem to object to bringing either spare parts or bikes along, though clearly you don't want to have too much stuff.

I just frotzed half an hour at work reading the team's messages. That is WAY TOO COOL.

One of the teams last year had bikes, and spent 2 weeks biking/hitchhiking through Mongolia to reach Ulan Bataar after their car completely died in the Gobi. Pure extract of awesome, that is.

heh... looks pretty cool, but i thought a mongolian rally was all about galloping about on horseback and attacking chinese walls with scimitars.

all the cars you could use are in europe already though. they don't bring those tiny things over here. the VWs were all too big, most mini's are too big, you need a good fiat 500. its aircooled like the VW and way cuter.

Yeah, the real trouble for American teams is getting a proper car. From the reports of past rallies it's vitally important the vehicle be registered in the name of someone on the team, otherwise you're not getting into Russia. But you can't do that in Britain unless you live there, so it gets all complicated.

I was thinking a Trabant would be fun. Classy look.
