Would anyone be interested in helping out with the Olympic Coast Cleanup, April 22-23? I think getting a group together would be pretty cool. If people want to split a hotel, we could do that. Camping could be also be fun, though I'd need to fix my old coleman stove.

Could mebbe do that.

I have a coleman. How big does it need to be?

Not huge, just big enough to easily cook for n cold, tired people. I've got a much-beloved 20 year old clunker that, other than a broken pump on the fuel tank, works just fine. I need to get it fixed anyway, purely out of sentiment. I grew up with it, used it to cook thai noodles on the Columbia, made hot chocolate on it at the arctic circle. The very sight of it makes me smile.

Yeah, if you and Amy go, I'd be interested. It sounds like fun, but I'd want to have people I knew there.

Sounds like they very well might. We should all go to the April 5 orientation at REI.

What do you have available in the way of gear?

I have a one-man tent, a large-ish backpacking/hiking pack, one hiking sleeping bag, and two car-camping sleeping bags. Carl might have some camping stuff that we can borrow as well.

I'm into that, either camping or hotel.

My son and I did the coastal cleanup back a couple months in the SF Bay area. My work is right down by the bay, so we helped with the wildlife refuge on the old salt marsh flats.

Problem was, there were so many goodhearted helpers from my company, that, though we arrived on time, others had been working for an hour and had cleaned up all the easy pickings, and we were reduced to pulling non-native weeds for the most part. We had to leave, and we heard that the volunteers then fanned out and cleaned the highway too. The salt marshes there hold a wonderous amount of birdlife now.

Pulling non-native weeds is important!

Yup it is. They had a good organization with different bags for different types of trash, so they could recycle and compost.

We had to leave early to go make quilts for the Linus project, leaving one good cause for another, but I run that one :/

Aw, crumbs -- I have company coming that weekend. Probly not going, then.
