Can it get enough tension to be playable without coming apart?

If it's playable, it's probably glued together.

Yes, it's playable. No, it's not glued together.

The owner (Pete Alway) said it was playable but very very quiet. I heard him tuning it but I can't remember if we heard him play it.

Yes, it's playable. In fact, he had it in a klezmer tuning for a while; I kept waiting for him to break into a bouncy Jewish-wedding-style number or something, but I guess that would have been a bit much for even his storied fingers. :-)

I heard him play it - I even played it a bit myself. Two of the strings are fishing line, one is an actual nylon harp string. The tone is surprisingly good considering that the top of the resonating chamber is plastic rather than wood. But it is vewwy vewwy quiet.

I have more pictures, including a couple of [livejournal.com profile] peteralway playing it, that I may post in the next couple of days.
