Cyphertext is back up, for no good reason. Covad didn't find anything -- everything was fine at the TNI. No word on if I'm being charged $199 for the privilege or not. I bet I am.

Next time this happens I'm disconnecting jacks one by one. Bah.

Water in the line somewhere?

Had that happen to me once: first DSL, then audio went out during a downpour; came back in the opposite order over the course of two or three days.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. It died after suspiciously heavy rains -- the first ones since we've moved in. And there is a line going up the outside of the house. Just stapled on, probably not even outdoor rated cable. That'll be the first one I yank next time.

In my case, it was on their side of the box, but an outside cable is always a good place to start. Unfortunately, the long wait for an appointment and the low priority of DSL relative to voice means that there's plenty of time for the wires to dry out.

The threat of that $199 "we didn't find anything that's our job to fix" charge is why we switched from Covad to Comcast.
