While I agree with what they're saying, there's tremendous amounts of evidence for the damage DDT does to other animals in the environment. It's not reasonable to expect countries to produce stuff that's dangerous to them, to fight a threat they don't face, to put the issue in strictly pragmatic terms. It WOULD be nice to develop an inexpensive chemical that kills mosquitos and doesn't have horrendous effects on other things in the environment, and given the outbreaks of West Nile virus in recent years, I bet there's a lot of research going into this.
