Wiggly World Studios, a local film co-op, had a garage sale today. They really focus on film to the exclusion of video, which leaves me out. But I stopped by to see what they had.

I ended up buying two larger speaker stands (to be used as lighting stands) for $1 each and an old Super-8 camera for $3. With batteries in it runs with a wonderfully addictive click-purrrrhummmmmclickyclickyclickyclickyhummmmmm... I understand why people love film despite the insane expense. It isn't just the better color response and lovely grain. Everything about it feels more real, more human. Nothing about video equipment evokes this response. The only feedback is a sterile beep.

However, while we might shoot a couple cartridges on this for fun, I don't think we'll be doing projects on film any time soon. That whole 'inane expense' thing. Last Monday we shot 27 minutes of raw footage for a silly little piece. On Super-8 that would have taken 9 3-minute cartridges, at a cost of about $20 each, processing included. To do any halfway decent editing I'd want to get them transfered to DV for another $100 or so. The audio would have to be recorded seperately -- while Super-8 with audio did exist, it is no longer made. The would mean buying decent audio recording equipment, plus dealing with unsynched sound. Shooting would be slower, though we'd have a real reason to use the clapping part of the clapboard for once. The entire project would cost several hundred dollars, as compared to $6 for a (only half used) tape.

Speaking of the video shot Monday, we'll be taking it to the 911 Media Arts Center Open Screening this coming Monday (the 9th). Admission is $1. It's just a silly little piece shot mostly to play with the new camcorder, but there isn't anything wrong with silly. As always, the content of the rest of the open screening is unknown and highly variable in terms of quality and offensiveness.
