Sometimes I really love being a programmer. I'm not a great programmer, but I'm good enough. I love being able to reach about and create something from nothing. Pure creation. Magic, really. I know the incantations to bend (some subset of) reality to my will.

Friday night I finally started working on my next muse: Erato, an image indexing system that I had been thinking of for a long time. Dump images in a special directory, then use a web interface to give each a description. The desc/user/date is added to a database and the images are moved someplace safe. You can then search the metadata to easily find images. I've been meaning to document my life better, and I think this will help. Plus it's fun to watch [livejournal.com profile] xiadyn add porn to it.

Sometimes things just fall togther. This was one of those times. The interface is still kinda ugly, but it works and works quite well. One of those wonderful ideas with a really great effort/usefulness curve. It didn't feel like I was creating so much as just uncovering something that already existed. Beautiful.

On the other hand, sometimes programming is a pain in the ass, like the work stuff that I'm putting off with every keystroke of this entry. Oh well.
