I'm not sure if I should sleep at this point, so I'm idly poking at things on my computer. I had my travel item list open, which serves mostly to remind me to take various chargers, toiletries and sleeping clothes, which I used to forget with alarming frequency. It also has lists for various specialized trips, like changing oil and camping. At the bottom is a note 'Emergency: See emergency_item_list.txt' .

In emergency_item_list.txt are the things I need to take in case of an emergency (duh). It is subdivided by the type of emergency and how much time is available to pack. Thus I have an easy reference for everything from a fire1 (local, no time to pack: purses, backup CDs, changes of clothes, document lockbox) to quickly escalating nuclear war (global, very little time to pack: above, basic survival gear, as much machining gear/books as I can grab) to a 9+ Torino scale asteroid on the way (global, plenty of time to pack: above, all my reference material, all my machining gear -- including the lathe if possible -- plus a guitar and lots of fiction).

I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?

1: This is only included for completeness. I have excellent fire drill reflexes, thanks to spending every summer as a child waiting for the wildfires to come for us.
