After being a dedicated fan for a solid majority of my life, I finally attended a Depeche Mode concert last Saturday. It was pretty great, including a really good cover of Heroes during the encore.

I was in a reflective mood, and listening to songs I know so well in a different context let me think about them like I probably haven't since, oh, the late 90s. There is definitely a lot of gender dynamics in them that aren't so great. But I think I realize now why they have always been so close to my heart. The songs are all from a male perspective, but they still have an distinct vulnerability to them. This wasn't a term I had available back in the day, but some of them are really quite emo. And that's pretty great. Our culture doesn't let that happen very often.

It made me even happier to be there. Flawed as they may be, they're still something worth celebrating.
